Newbiggin-by-the-Sea North Beach
Newbiggin North Beach on the Northumberland coast stretches down from Hully Rocks and curves around the bay in a south-westerly direction for about 500 metres.
To the east of the bay is a rocky outcrop which can be a good place to go rockpooling at low tide. There is a lifeboat station near the beach, and a Maritime Centre Opens in a new window nearby.
Newbiggin Maritime Centre raised the funds to buy the equipment available and they manage the loan process.
A large car park can be found adjacent to the Maritime Centre Opens in a new window. Parking is free and there are six designated blue badge spaces. There is a ramp to the Maritime Centre Opens in a new window.
Access to the beach
There are four access ramps to the beach from the promenade.
At Newbiggin we have two wheelchairs and a hoist
Please be aware the equipment available may change as we sometimes move equipment between sites.
The beach is beside the Maritime Centre Opens in a new window which is fully accessible with a ramp entrance. There is a wheelchair lift in the exhibition area, ramp to roof observation platform and flat access throughout the building.
The Breakwater Cafe Opens in a new window has table service. The varied menu is all freshly cooked using many locally sourced ingredients. There are also children activities available.
The Centre also has a disabled toilet, a portable hoist, a full size changing table and is recognised on the Changing Places website.
Restrictions are in place on certain areas of the beach. For detailed information you can check check Northumberland County Council Website Opens in a new window.
About the area
Newbiggin by the Sea has a sheltered, south facing tidal bay, bounded by a long promenade. A breakwater in the bay is topped by the offshore bronze & steel sculpture ‘Couple’ designed by Sean Henry.
The beach is beside the Maritime Centre Opens in a new window which can be found on the eastern side of the promenade. The centre celebrates the heritage of the village, and hosts exhibitions in the Mary Joicey Hall, Fishing and Community Galleries.
